The 2012 Lakes Area Fact Book provides a demographic and statistical overview of the Alexandria/Douglas County, MN area. Population Estimates By Area:
Unlike many Greater Minnesota communities, the population of Douglas County continues to grow at a rapid pace, and is projected to continue growing into the future. Most significantly, the Douglas County area is projected to maintain and grow it’s “under 45” age group, who are in their prime working years. The presence of a wide variety of stable and growing employers, along with the lakes and natural environment and excellent educational opportunities continue to draw and retain residents of all ages.

The median household income level for Douglas County continues to grow at a rapid pace. While it still lags behind the State and US averages, the percentages of increase year over year are significant and the gap is closing.

Douglas County Labor Force Projections: 2005-2035
The Douglas County labor force is growing in all age groups
unlike other areas of the state, especially those in greater Minnesota. While
there is a significant projected increase in residents age 65 and older during
the coming years, Douglas County is also seeing a general increase of
individuals in their “prime working years,” from ages 25 to 54. The total
Douglas County labor force is projected to increase by 22% to 23,850 workers
from 2005 to 2035.

Local businesses draw approximately 17,236 employees from throughout the region to work within Douglas County. Douglas County residents make up 83.7% of the workforce (14,434 people), while the remaining workers come from surrounding counties (16.3% of workers or 2,802 people).
